Toronto sex attack victim responds to mayor’s niece in letter
In an open letter to Krista Ford, a victim of the recent string of sex attacks in Toronto lashed out on Thursday at the mayor’s niece, who recently suggested that women should avoid dressing like a whore after a police press conference about sexual assault.
“I believe you have a right to your body and regardless of how you do or don’t dress it I believe you have a right to respect and personal security,” wrote the woman, who says she was one of the women that was recently sexually attacked while walking in the Annex.
“I guess that’s the key difference in our thinking. You could wear a t-shirt that says ‘I’m literally asking for it’ and I’d still advocate for your security,” the woman continued.
The woman said she was sexually assaulted while wearing a knee-length polka-dot dress that she sported to Easter dinner, “where I’m fairly certain I could make little to no money whoring,” she wrote.
Ford ignited a Twitter firestorm Wednesday after she suggested that women should avoid dressing like a whore after a police press conference about sexual assault.
In a tweet, Ford said: “Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defense classes & don’t dress like a whore. #DontBeAVictim #StreetSmart.”
Ford, who’s a former member of Toronto’s lingerie football team, has since removed the post from the Twitter account.
On Thursday afternoon Ford again took to Twitter to respond to the criticism.
She wrote: “I didn’t mean to cause such an alarm and I apologize if I did. I just want women to be safe.”
