Halloween: How to dress up as Rob Ford and the TTC →
the Toronto Star There are two secrets to the successful adult Halloween costume. Number one – topicality. Number two – accept that you cannot consider yourself a grown-up if you dress like Count Chocula. Ever. We realize you’re short on cash. You heard Rob Ford was eliminating the vehicle-registration fee, so you went out and bought a Jeep Cherokee. Then you realized that the...

Rob Ford’s election is a mandate for change →
the Globe and Mail So much for the “Toronto elites.” The first mayor in decades not anointed by either business or labour elites, Rob Ford’s resounding victory, after a campaign that he led from the start, sends an unambiguous message to city council, and to city workers, that it is no longer business as usual at City Hall. Mr. Ford was declared elected eight minutes after polls closed...

Ford defeats Smitherman to lead Canada’s largest... →
the Globe and Mail It was a night of jubilation for Rob Ford, and a night of momentous change for Canada’s largest city. Mr. Ford, a suburban Toronto councillor who few expected to win the mayoralty race when he began campaigning seven months ago, won a commanding victory over his nearest competitor, former deputy premier of Ontario George Smitherman. His win marks a sharp right turn for...

lukesimcoe asked: @tayciamc You're wrong. TO doesn't have a spending problem. It's not running a deficit, and given that both the province and the federal gov't have tightened their wallets, the city is just fine. And besides, much of the cost of running the city is in necessary services: garbage pick-up, road maintenance, sewage, etc. All the stuff Ford wants to cut -- jobs at city hall,...

whosecityisthis asked: Smitherman’s concession speech was downright beautiful. It was articulate, humble, and full of compassion. It’s unfortunate that everyone could not see this side of him. Smitherman is a great man, who would have led a mayoralty built on positive investments in public transit, and social progression. Instead, we’ll be focusing unnecessary tax cuts, a “war against bikes and...

johnjacobjingleheimerschmidt asked: this prbly wasn't publicized as much, but a friend of my organized a mayoral debate for the latino community in toronto, and when asked what could be done by the city to combat the higher than average drop-out rate amongst latino youth, rob ford said that they should use incentives like soccer and music, you know things that all latino youth are interested in to reel them back into the...

John Moore’s post-election message to Toronto... →
the National Post Take a pill Toronto. Rob Ford has been elected mayor. Now breathe. You there in Rosedale, step away from the cask strength single malt scotch. Hey, you guys in Etobicoke, quit high-fiving each other over how much fun it’s going to be taking out cyclists with car doors on University Street. For the next four years Rob Ford will be mayor and we should all be fine with that. ...

savanna asked: It's not a matter of opinion that Ford is a bigot. He opposes homosexuality and has made racist comments. I get it: some people like him because they don't like spending money and feel that they have no civic obligation to pay taxes. He says he will cut taxes, and wants to cut funding to social services. That doesn't mean that criticizing him duly for being a bigot is biased.

de-sanguinea asked: To add to the comment about anti-Ford attitudes being about him being a racist and a homophobe, I'd also like point out that he's been accused of assaulting his wife (she dropped charges, which unfortunately fits in with the cycle of abuse that many women end up falling into), and has also made remarks about wanting to stop immigration altogether, which is extraordinarily xenophobic. Rob Ford elected mayor →
the Toronto Sun Rob Ford has steamed his way from Etobicoke to City Hall, vowing Toronto will never be the same. The brash councillor with the rumpled suits and the simple message of cutting waste chugged his way to victory in the mayor’s race, ploughing through the challenge of more polished opponents and seizing the imagination of voters, as torontosun.com declared him the winner...
